Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pi
Makes 8 servings
Traditional Dutch apple pies usually have a crumb or
streusel topping instead of the usual top crust. The pie can be eaten warm or cold and served
by itself or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients
pie crust
3 lbs baking apples, peeled, cored and sliced (about 8 cups)
1 ½ tablespoons lemon juice
¾ cups white granulated sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
¼ cup all purpose flour
¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Topping:
1 cup flour
1/3 cup white granulated sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
½ cup butter (I stick)
Directions
Preheat oven to 375°
After preparing the pie crust place in the pie pan.
Stir the apples, lemon juice, sugars, flour, and spices together
in a large bowl. Place the mixture in
the pie pan.
Prepare the topping by mixing the flour and sugars together
in a medium size bowl. Cut the butter
into the flour and sugar mixture and place on top of the apples.
After the pie has baked for about 30 minutes you might want
to put a pan under the pie to catch any juice that may run off. Bake the pie for about one hour total.
Make the pie with BAKING apples like Honey Crisp. Do not use Red Delicious apples that might
taste great but don’t work well in baked goods.
