Arizona Navajo Indian Tacos
8 servings
These tacos use Indian fry bread as the base for the
tacos. The recipe is based on the
Smithsonian recipe for fry bread. Fry
bread was created in 1864 when the Indians used basic staples given to them by
the US government at the time they made them move from Arizona to New Mexico. Today, many Indians from different tribes
make fry bread.
Ingredients
Fry bread:
3 cups all purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 ¼ cups warm water
Oil for frying
Tacos:
2 pounds ground beef
taco seasoning (can use 2 (1 ounce) packages of
seasoning)
water
Toppings:
Shredded lettuce
Chopped tomatoes
Shredded cheddar cheese
Avocado
Sour cream
Salsa
Chopped onions
Directions
To make the fry bread place the flour, baking
powder and salt in a large bowl and blend. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour the warm water
in. Mix well until the flour and water
are combined. Form the dough into a 3
inch diameter roll. Cover with a dry
dish towel and set aside for about 10 minutes to let the dough rest.
Cut the dough in half and in half again and again
until you have 8 pieces of about equal size. Take one of the pieces and place on a lightly floured surface. With a rolling pin roll out the piece until
it is about ¼ inch thick. Keep the other
pieces covered until ready to use.
Fill a large pot or saucepan with oil until it is
at least one inch deep. Heat the oil
over medium heat. You can tell when it
is warm enough by placing a small piece of dough in the oil and seeing if it
will bubble. Place each rolled out piece
of dough in the warmed oil and cook for about 2-3 minutes per side. When each fry bread is done place on a plate
covered with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
Once the fry bread is done, cook the ground
meat. Crumble and cook until it is no
longer pink. Drain the excess fat and
add the taco seasoning and water. Cook
on low heat for about 10 minutes.
Place the fry bread on a plate and top with the
taco flavored meat and add the other toppings of your choice.
Eat and enjoy!
Notes
You can substitute ground chicken or turkey for
the beef if you prefer.
